The Future Tree is an eye-catching canopy structure, spanning the office courtyard at the headquarters of project partner Basler & Hofmann.
The composite structure of the FutureTree is made of a robotically assembled timber canopy, supported by a concrete column cast using a robotically 3D printed formwork. This combination of distinct research into different materials and assembly methods strongly demonstrates the design opportunities and structural capabilities of digital fabrication for sustainable, efficient and economical construction.
The project was developed by NCCR Digital Fabrication researchers at Gramazio Kohler Research and Physical Chemistry of Building Materials, in collaboration with Basler & Hofmann AG and ERNE AG Holzbau.
