“STEP2” Unit at NEST Inaugurated

STEP2 is a showcase project for the co-creation approach. End of august EMPA inaugurated the module in Dübendorf. The STEP2 unit aims to realise holistic solutions for construction projects that take all important aspects into account from the very beginning through the collaboration of all partners involved along the entire value chain.

Part of it is the CADENZA helical concrete stair made of concrete which developed a by researchers from the NCCR DFAB at the Chair of Digital Construction Technologies with engineering support from WaltGalmarini. It sets new standards in the field of ultra-thin high-performance materials: it can be assembled and dismantled in a modular fashion and, thanks to digital production, enables customised solutions for building renovation with just a single 3D-printed formwork for all steps.

Professor Benjamin Dillenburger gives an insight into the Cadenza process and explains why this type of staircase is ideal for staircase construction in existing buildings.
