Dr. Timothy Wangler

Timothy Wangler is a senior researcher in the Chair of Physical Chemistry of Building Materials. He completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University in 2009, with research focusing on the intersection of chemical engineering, materials science, and civil engineering, generally dealing with organic-inorganic interfacial and multiscale phenomena. Within the NCCR dfab, he has focused on concrete processing for enabling digital fabrication processes in architecture.

Work Topic

Cementitious materials currently being utilized for DFAB processes are inherently less ecological than standard concretes: processing demands matrix-rich materials, and robust material control demands, until now, high clinker contents. Addressing this requires 1) a larger maximum aggregate size and 2) incorporation of cement substitutions.
